Monmouth County Republicans Demonized Trans Students and Teachers and Pushed to Close Schools. Who Did They Help?
Campaign filings and business records trace overlapping relationships among school board campaigns, political consultants, a local news outlet and donors associated with Middletown’s $8 million land-swap agreement.
Two businesses associated with Valerie and Frank Montecalvo gave $5,000 to a Highlands political committee supporting school board candidates. The committee ultimately reported spending nearly all its money with GallCo Media LLC.
A separate set of records places Archangel Strategy Group LLC, a consultant paid by the Monmouth County Republican Committee, State Senator Declan O’Scanlon and local school board campaigns, at a Highlands address connected through business registrations to Valerie Montecalvo.
In Middletown, businesses associated with the family contributed to Mayor Tony Perry’s campaign one day after two Chapel Hill property companies were formed. Those companies later became parties to an agreement involving an $8 million payment and the transfer of township-owned land.
These findings connect Public Record NJ’s reporting on school board elections, political media and land-use decisions, showing how the same consultants, political organizations and business relationships recur across seemingly separate local controversies.
The records do not establish that the Montecalvos directed political coverage, that contributions influenced official decisions or that school disputes were orchestrated to distract from land transactions. They show that the political network promoting local officials overlaps with businesses with interests before government.
The central question is whether the network that amplified school board outrage also promoted officials making decisions affecting donors’ financial interests while families faced school closures and unresolved educational needs.
PRNJ reviewed a year of reporting alongside additional campaign-finance and business records and sought comment from the people involved.
